2007 NBC “Pro Series” Championship Press Release
11.12.2007
The 2007 NBC “Pro Series” Championship is in the books and what a championship it was. This year’s field was probably one of our strongest fields ever as many touring pros were in there mixing it up with our regular guys who I would put up against anyone in the country. With several past NBC Champions along with FLW and BASS Champions it would prove to be a great event.
On Thursday we had a great meal underwritten by Foothills Marine and Palmetto Boat Center which was prepared by Brandon and Angelique. That low country boil was great as they served over 150 lbs. of sausage, 170 lbs. of shrimp. It was a festive evening as the 176 teams were all anticipating the start of a great event. After all how many times do you get the chance at winning a prize package valued at over $85,000.00?
Lake Murray known for its big bass was showing her tough side as we only had 1 - 8 lb. class fish for the three days of competition with that coming on Day 1 by Paul Rigsbee of Durham, NC and Russell Rigsbee of Apex, NC. Their 8.16 lb. bass took big fish honors on day 1.
The Day 1 lead went to Louie Hull of Casar, NC and Chuck Montgomery of Blacksburg, SC with a 15.98 lb limit. Louie won our 2006 Championship on Lake Norman while fishing with Chuck’s son Andy after Chuck did a back flip off his barn and shattered his leg earlier in the year.
Second on day 1 were Grant McPeters and Donnie Woody both of Marion, NC with 14.05 lbs. with third being held by Drew Montgomery of Concord, NC and Rodney Adams of Kannapolis NC. Holding down fourth were Paul Rigsbee and Ryan Rigsbee with 13.37 with Bobby Gill and Johnny Allen of Concord, NC rounding out the top 5 with 13.13 lbs.
On day 2 it would be a different story as several of the top teams stumbled slightly. Joey Davis and Rick Ohlson both of Garner, NC jumped from sixth to 1st with their 13.83 lbs. limit for a two-day total of 26.24 lbs.
In second were Jimmy Cole, Sumter, SC and Gary Weathersbee of Rimini, SC with a 14.26 lb. limit and a two-day total of 24.88 lbs. and dropping to third were Louie Hull and Chuck Montgomery with a 23.71 lb. total. Jumping to fourth from 55th were Scott Hamrick of Denver, NC and Roger Hoover or Mooresville, NC who brought in the heaviest sack of the tournament at 16.74 lbs. for a two-day total of 23.63 lbs. Rounding out the top 5 were Billy Bledsoe of Fayetteville, NC and James Baxley of Hope Mills, NC with 21.92 lbs.
Big bass on day-2 went to Jesse Spell of Cary, NC and Dean Lairson of Wendell, NC with a 6.88 lb. largemouth good for $400.00.
The Allison Construction Small Bass Award went to Don Corntassel of Kannapolis, NC with a.61 lb. fish good for $500.00 and R.L Jackson won our Skeeter Demo Ride drawing for $250.00 cash.
This was also cut day where we narrowed the field down to the Top 35. These 35 teams would be competing for a 1st place of two 2008 Skeeter ZX200 powered by Yamaha 200 outboards. In addition they would receive two rods from Skeet’s Custom Rods and FREE entries into 7 Pro Series events in 2008 bringing the total value to $85.260.00.
Day 3 the 35 teams met at Dreher Island State Park and at 6:30am they were on the way. At the start Scott Hamrick and Roger Hoover blew up and returned to jump into my Skeeter 20i to try and salvage the day.
As the teams started showing up at 3:00pm most were all smiles, after all they had made in it to the final day in an elite field of anglers and no matter what happened they would be taking home some cash.
We began the final weigh-in with 35th going into the day weighing first. After about 30 minutes we got down to our final three. Jacob Powroznik from Prince George, VA and Anthony Gagliardi from Prosperity, SC got the crowd going and took the hot seat after weighing in the heaviest sack of Day 3. Their 14.64 lb. limit brought their 3-day total up to 35.58 lbs.
Our day-2 team came in needing 10.71 lbs. to take the lead. After weigh master Jeff Turner teased the crowd the scales set at 11.80 lbs. enough to take the lead and their turn in the hot seat.
Needing 10.45 lbs. to take the lead, Rick Ohlson and Joey Davis looked confident, after all they had been steady all week. Once the scales locked on 12.94 lbs. for a 3-day total of 39.18 lbs. it was settled and they were crowned the 2007 “NBC” Pro Series” Champions. Skeeter Boats Regional Rep Dave Holloway was on hand to present the awards to our champions.
Joey and Rick said the key to their victory was the Zoom Horny Toad that caught their biggest fish this week. They also caught fish on a Zoom Trick Worm and worked shallow fish all three days. Great job guys and congratulations on a great year!!!
The Top 5 finishers today will also advance to the NO ENTRY FEE / TOP GUN Challenge presented by Carolina Lunker Sauce. This tournament will be held April 13, 2008 on W. Kerr Scott in North Wilkesboro.
It was a great ending to a great week. We got to see many of our friends from across the country and met many new ones. Miriam Atria and Capital City / Lake Murray Country was great as usual and treated us and the anglers like one of the family. The staff at Dreher Island State Park as we have come to know will bend over backwards to make sure you have everything you need.
We would also like to thank our great team of sponsors: Skeeter Boats, Yamaha Outboards, Carolina Lunker Sauce, Foothills Marine, Palmetto Boat Center, Lucky Craft, AnglersChannel.com, Capital City / Lake Murray Country, Visit Lake Norman, Wilkesboro Tourism Development Authority, Skeet’s Custom Rods, Allison Construction, Hot Shot Lures, Blue Marble, Snyder Packaging and Rejuvenade.
I also want to take them time to thank my staff, Jeff Turner (V.P. and little brother), Anthony Williams (2008 Foothills Director), Michael and Jane Norwood (NE Carolina / Lake Anna Directors), my wife Sherry and my grandson Brantley who kept the crowd and kid’s entertained. I wish I had that much energy. Also thanks to Brandon and Angelique for a great meal.
Thank you Bill & Linda form Fisherman's Friend for being there to keep our teams going and for the hot coffee every morning.
To our anglers we appreciate your support the past six years. To date we have paid out over $2,000,000.00 in cash and prizes and this with just a 30-boat regular season average over the six-year span. Just think of what we could pay if we doubled that? Spread the word and tell your friends. 2008 is going to be a hoot!!!!
